Namibia 2012

A few hints to Namibia

Camping

Be aware that it can be significantly cold at nighttime in July and August. Temperatures might fall below 0 C. Bring a good sleeping bag along and hire some extra blankets.

Car

Rent an SUV. It mustn't be a Toyota Hilux, but you feel saver when driving on rough terrain. Our Daihatsu Terios was just good enough, even though we had a flat tire.

Crime

You generally feel save outside the towns. There is poverty in Namibia. Therefore make sure your car is observed when you go shopping or have food in a restaurant, do not walk long distances in towns after dark.

Money

Use ATMs which are attached to banks, if possible withdraw cash only at bank opening hours. Most of the banks have a daily limit of 1000 NAD.

Road Conditions

The paved roads are generally in an excellent state. Unpaved roads may be in quite bad conditions. It depends when they have been maintained for the last time. Gravel roads are constantly overhauld.

Safari

Take time. Don't drive too far. Stay on the main roads. Open your eyes. Don't go off-season.

Travel preparations

Do not only book your flight early, book car and lodges far in advance, especially when you travel in July or August. Be aware; if an accommodation is fully booked, you might drive another 30 to 50km to find the next one.

Don't miss

Etosha: if you are out for animals.
Epupa: tropical, baobab trees, himba villages, nice and warm during wintertime.
Spitzkoppe: adventurous camping, climb the rocks.
Sossusvlei: climb the dunes.
