Maya Sites

Chichen Itza

Is probably the most famous temple in Yucatan. It's pyramid is well conserved. There's quite some more buildings to be visited.

Uxmal

This site is surrounded by jungle. It's main pyramid is not as symetric as Chichen Itza. After sunset a multi media show is taking place which should not be missed.

Tulum

Is situated ashore of the Caribean ocean. The site is not as well conserved as Chichen Itza or Uxmal. The main temple is somewhat smaller but impressively overtopping the sea.

Cancun

Is one of the biggest seaside resorts at the Caribean ocean. It's very (north) americanized. Stay in town and take the shuttle to the laguna for beaches and night-live. Be prepared to pay tips like in the States. Waiters ask for it if you don't.

Isla Mujeres

The island is very touristy. Lots of shops.

Merida

Characteristic Latinamerican town with a church and a plaza in its center. It is fairly touristy. It's the basis for excursions to Uxmal.

Playa del Carmen

Still friendly and small at that time (1993). Town is close to the beach. Some nice bars at the beach and zocalo. You can take excursions to Cozumel an island which can be explored by bicycle.

Valladolid

Comparable with Merida but smaller and less touristy. Basis for excursions to Chichen Itza.
